L. Frank Baum, who wrote the Wizard of Oz, wrote several books while staying at the hotel and helped to design these crown shaped chandeliers, giving this banquet room the nickname of “the Crown Room.”

We stayed on the fourth floor in a room with a balcony overlooking the courtyard garden and a view of the sea (when standing on tippy toes).

Every night, Nina claimed to want to watch a pay per view movie and fell asleep by 8:30 pm before Chris even finished looking through the guide. However, Nina was up by 6:30 am every morning to feed the twins a snack and spent several pleasant mornings watching the sunrise from our balcony.

During our last visit to the beach, we witnessed the new Navy recruits jogging in mass along the water through dense, wet sand.

The sounds and sights of military jets and helicopters flying over the beach at Coronado on the way to the base at North Island is a regular occurrence.

A row of yachts, possibly involved in a race, pass by Chris as he searches for sand dollars.

Chris regretfully leaving the water to prepare to return home to Colorado.

Nina anointing her baby bump with sea water.

Nina: like a big, white, beached whale on the sand!

John D. Spreckels, son of the great San Francisco Sugar King, Claus Spreckels, bought the Hotel del Coronado in the late 1800s and built this mansion across the street from the hotel on Glorietta Boulevard in 1908.

The mansion is now the Glorietta Bay Hotel with several luxury rooms within the original mansion named for members of the Spreckels family and historical Coronado landmarks.

In 1939, this music room was added to the side of the Spreckels mansion.

The mansion has been beautifully and truthfully renovated.

On our last day, we went to the beach in the morning, then had to check out of the hotel by noon. Our shuttle to the airport didn't arrive until 3:00 pm so we had several hours to waste, in the heat wearing our “return to Colorado clothes.” We ended up sitting at the Babcock and Story bar at the Del eating ice cream for an hour. All in all, it was a wonderful trip!
